Community Overview

 

The Shackan Indian Band is Nlaka'pamx community located in the Nicola Valley approximately 20 kilometres east of  Spences Bridge and 40 kilometres west of Merritt on highway 8. The Shackan Indian Band is one of four bands in the Nicola Valley who comprise the Scw'exmx (People of the Creeks, taken from the name of the Nicola River, Scw'ex, meaning creek).

 

The bands who make up the Scw'exmx are, in turn, members of the Nlaka'pamx Nation, the territory of which extends well into the State of Washington, as far north as Ashcroft, as far east as Douglas Lake and as far West of Lillooet.

 

All the communities of the Nlaka'pamx Nation hold title to this territory, encompassing thousands of square kilometres collectively. The Shackan Indian Band has three reserves. The majority of band members reside on the main reserve, located along the Nicola River, which has a total land base of 6,413 acres. The Papsilqua Reserve is located to the northeast of Papsilqua and Skuhun Creek with a total of 730 acres. The Soldatquo Reserve is located a few kilometres north of Shackan with the total land area. of 2,429 acres.

Chief & Council

Shackan Indian Band has a council comprised of a Chief and two Council members. The Chiefs position is hereditary, while the council is elected As the Shackan Band Government, the Chief and Council are responsible for managing the economic, political, social, cultural aspects of the community. Total revenues and expenditures for Band last year was approximately $500,000.

Administration

 

Through its affiliation with the Nicola Tribal Association  the Shackan Indian Band participates in social, economic, and political programs in conjunction with other Nicola tribal association member communities. The Shackan Indian Band office is located on the Shulus Reserve of the Lower Nicola Indian Band, approximately 7 kilometres west of Merritt.
