The elks recreation children's camp society of b.c.

about the elks recreation children's camp society

The B.C. Elks Association established the Elks Recreational Children's Camp Society in 1975.

The purposes of the Society are:

  • To promote mental, spiritual, and physical development throughout British Columbia

  • To provide recreational facilities for youth.

  • To operate as a charitable organization receiving donations, to assist in carrying out the objectives of the Camp Society.

  • To cooperate with other organizations having similar objectives.

The Camps are supported by Members of the Elks and Royal Purple Lodges, throughout British Columbia, along with donations and contributions received from user groups, the general public and corporations. The primary source of fundraising for operating costs of the Camps is done through the annual Dream Lottery.

WHO WE ARE:

The Elks Family Hearing Resource Centre is a provincial program that provides comprehensive services to families with young deaf and hard of hearing children throughout B.C. We also provide consultation and training to other professionals working with deaf and hard of hearing children.

From a Parent......

"The biggest benefit we received from the Centre was the information and support we needed for us to help our daughter."

COMMUNICATION APPROACH:

We promote early and successful communication between children and their families. How a child will communicate most effectively depends on factors that are unique to each child and family.

We assist families to discover the ways their child is best able to communicate. A variety of options are available, including speech, speech reading, auditory learning, sign supported speech, and American Sign Language.

SERVICES FOR FAMILIES:

Outreach staff travel to homes and communities to provide hands on training for deaf and hard of hearing children, their families, and the team of community service providers.

Families from outside the Lower Mainland may arrange to visit the centre for a 1 to 5 day education and support program.

From a Parent......
"When our child was first diagnosed with a hearing loss we felt so isolated. Talking with other parents helped us so much. They understood our worries and questions and were able to give us many useful tips."
